This is how I set up a room that has a popcorn textured ceiling and coves, The ceiling had water damage from a roof leak along a dormer, the flashing was bad. The Homeowner had the flashing replace along with having a new roof installed.

This is the textured ceiling, as you can see there are a few spots which are water stains from the roof leak.

This is where the water damage has caused the plaster under the texture to delaminate. I found after scraping the texeture off the plaster ceiling, the guys who did this popcorn ceiling didn't even repair the water damage, they had used durabond over the plaster and then sprayed the popcorn texture.

Here I have scraped all the texture from the ceiling, once I had that done I checked the water damage. well as you can see the putty coat has come off in two places and then I had to remove the plaster and the rock lath in the ceiling. I will square the hole up and install new sheetrock.
